USS LEAD SUPERFUND SITE SOIL REMEDIATION
PROJECT SUMMARY
BCC was hired to provide remediation services at the USS Lead Superfund site, which included parts of the former USS Lead facility and surrounding commercial, municipal, and residential areas. The primary contaminants of concern at this site were lead and arsenic. The USS Lead site was listed on the National Priorities List of the worst contaminated sites in the country in 2009.

BCC provided remediation services during the final phase of the cleanup of lead-contaminated soil at an area that had been previously redeveloped into a former public housing complex in East Chicago, IN. Using GPS control systems and precise dosages of stabilization reagents, we transformed hazardous soil into non-hazardous material. This material was then excavated, transported to a central loadout location on-site, and loaded onto trucks for off-site disposal at a permitted landfill facility.

Additional remediation activities included:

-
Stabilized 38,000 CY of hazardous lead contaminated soil rendering it non-hazardous
-
Excavation and removal of 60,000 CY of soil total
-
Disposed of 90,000 TN of soil to permitted Subtitle D landfill
-
Installed 180,000 SY of demarcation barrier
-
Imported and placed 60,000 CY of approved slag aggregate cover at a 1-ft depth to cap the site
