ASH POND #2 CLOSURE
PROJECT SUMMARY
BCC was engaged by NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) to execute a clean closure of a Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) pond at their Joliet Power Generation Station. Ash Pond # 2 was used to receive process water containing bottom ash from Units 7 and 8 at the Joliet facility. The Joliet Station was converted to Gas fired Generators in 2016. After the pond was dewatered, BCC construction ingress and egress ramps within the pond to facilitate the excavation and loading of the bottom ash into end dumps. Bottom ash removed from Pond 2 was transported to a permitted offsite ash management facility. Once the ash was removed from the pond, BCC inspected and repaired the liner before the pond was placed into service as a stormwater retention pond. The project included:
-
Removal of 50,000 CY of bottom ash
-
7,000,000 GAL of water treated and discharged
