ASH POND #2 CLOSURE
PROJECT SUMMARY
BCM Remediation (BCM) was engaged by NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) to execute a clean closure of a Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) pond at their Joliet Power Generation Station, located at Joliet, Illinois. Ash Pond # 2 was used to receive process water containing bottom ash from Units 7 and 8 at the Joliet facility. The Joliet Station was converted to Gas fired Generators in 2016. The project included;

Site preparation and site clearing and grubbing.

Ash Dewatering,

Water Treatment,

Excavation, stabilization and staging bottom ash,

Managed Transportation and logistics of bottom ash to a permitted offsite ash management facility, and,

Inspected and repaired pond liner and return to service.

BCM removed 50,000 cubic yards of bottom ash from Ash Pond #2, In addition, over 7,000,000 gallons of water were removed and treated prior to discharge. After the pond was dewatered, BCM construction ingress and egress ramps within the pond to facilitate the excavation and loading of the bottom ash into end dumps. Bottom ash removed from Pond 2 was transported to a permitted offsite ash management facility. Once the ash was removed from the pond, BCM inspected and repaired the liner before the pond was placed into service as a stormwater retention pond.
